University of Sunderland marks World Mental Health Day

Written by on 10th October 2025

The University of Sunderland today celebrated World Mental Health Day with a student wellbeing event at the Student Union at CitySpace.

Students were welcomed to CitySpace between 11am and 2pm to take a break between lectures and look after their mental health by relaxing and engaging in a range of activities offered, including board games and a bouncy castle.

Freebies were also on offer, as well as support and advice from the University Wellbeing Team, who joined the event to provide information on the important services they have helping supporting students and looking after their mental health.

The Student Union’s Kai Valentine was helping out at the event, helping to spread joy across the campus this Friday, as well as sharing other events happening at the union and the services that are on offer to support students through their time at university.

He said: “It’s really important for students to relax and have time out during their studies. It’s something that I always found as a student.

“Going to a quiz, going to an event like all the stuff we’ve got going on at the SU such as our Halloween party at the end of the month are great opportunities for students to get out there, make friends, look after their mental health and get to know new people.”

Ian Yarrow, a welfare advisor with the wellbeing team, spoke about the services available and the impact they have on students and their mental health. He said: “We’ve got all sorts of things available so if students hit a bump in the road as part of their journey with the university, they can come to us if they need help” such as with isolation, health issues, stress and other mental health issues.

“They can discuss these in a confidential arena, it doesn’t cost anything, they can access it when they need and students are particularly appreciative of that.”
