Spark is a 24/7 community radio station run by volunteers with a website powered by Journalism students at the University of Sunderland. Our radio station is regulated by OFCOM and licensed by PRS/PPL to music play music.
What do we need from you if you apply to volunteer? We like to embrace a diverse environment and welcome people from all walks of life particularly those from underrepresented backgrounds. We ask that you put the audience first, have a can-do attitude, are self-motivated, believe in yourself, are passionate about Sunderland (and our audience), have integrity, are consistent in your offer to us, and respect our leadership team. We need you to work well alone and in a team, contribute positively to our culture, and be generally a nice friendly person. We also require you to understand compliance relating to radio and journalism and we will support you with that. Anyone joining the radio team will be required to complete our compliance training before being on-air.
Spark is one of the most exciting hobbies you could have. One day you might be interviewing a local charity group and the next day you could be at a festival chatting to Sigala. You can be under-18 to be part of our team but we ask that you have a responsible adult with you at all times.
We are especially keen to hear from programme producers, female presenters, and anyone with ideas for new shows around themes such as LGBTQ+, social action and volunteering, arts and culture, or local life.
