Issues on Tyne and Wear Metro lines cause disruption this week

Passengers faced delays on the Metro this week due to ongoing issues with the overhead lines on the tracks in the South Gosforth area.

University students from Newcastle and Sunderland found it very difficult on their commute to classes on Tuesday.

Newcastle University student Carter Davidson said: “My journey to university on Tuesday was made extremely difficult with the problems on the line as I was traveling into Newcastle from Jesmond, resulting in my journey to uni taking over an hour and being late for my first class of the day.”

As many North East citizens rely on these trains in order to commute, several were left angry and disappointed as they would not make it into work on time.

Statistics on the Nexus website show that 85% of operating trains arrived on time from August 17 up until September 13 this year. Furthermore, passengers traveling on these Metros have rated their overall satisfaction of the trains as a 7.7/10. The statistics are available to view on the official Nexus website here.

Kevin Storey, Operations Director for Nexus said: “During routine maintenance checks overnight on Monday, our overhead line team identified damaged wires in the South Gosforth area. Repairs were undertaken straight away on a 75 metre stretch of overhead line and we restored Metro services in the affected areas just before 1pm.”

The team at Nexus said: “We’re sorry for the inconvenience this incident caused to customers.”

As this issue was only active in the morning, passengers who were traveling in the afternoon faced no setbacks and praised the Nexus team for resolving the issue in a short period of time. There have been no further issues with the lines or trains since this incident happened on Monday night running into Tuesday morning.
