Record number of child poverty cases in the North East: The children’s charity that is fighting back
Written by Gabrielle Wilkinson on 15th July 2025
Love, Amelia is a children’s charity based in Hendon, Sunderland that offers support to families across the North East who are experiencing poverty.
Government statistics from the end of 2024 found that in 9 out of 10 local authorities across the North East, the proportion of children in low-income families was higher than the UK average. Staggering figures show the North East at a shocking 90%, contrasting with London at just 15%.
With many families clearly in need in the North East, charities like Love, Amelia are taking it into their own hands to help give children a better start in life. Since its founding, the charity has supported over 24,000 people, allocating more than £2 million worth of donations to families in need.
Love, Amelia was founded by Steph Capewell in memory of her daughter, who tragically passed away just 12 minutes after birth. In the months following Amelia’s death, Steph put together 12 boxes of essential items and donated them to Sunderland Maternity Unit, each box containing a letter, signed off with ‘Love, Amelia.’
Fast forward many more boxes and donations later, Love, Amelia became a registered charity in 2019 and now operates in a warehouse unit in Hendon on Glaholm Road.
On November 14, 2024, the charity deservedly received the highest award a local voluntary group can receive; The King’s Award for Voluntary Service, which was presented to them by Lord Lieutenant of Tyne and Wear, Lucy Winskell OBE in May.
Accepting a wide range of donations from children’s toys to toothpaste, it is easy to get involved and make a huge difference to a struggling family in the North East, with a monthly wish list posted as a guide.
