GP Thomas Kwan, 52, has been arrested for attempting to murder his mother’s partner Patrick O’Hara age 70 by allegedly poisoning him.

The Doctor, who worked at the Sunderland practice Happy House Surgery, and lives in Stockton-on-Tees was remanded in custody following his appearance at Newcastle Magistrates Court on Wednesday morning.

Kwan has not entered any plea at this time and has been charged with attempted murder.

He was arrested after his home was searched by police wearing Hazmat suits on Tuesday 6th of February and ‘unknown substances’ have been found.

A woman in her 30s has also been arrested and ‘released on police bail pending further enquiries’.

The Hong Kong-born Doctor moved here 39 years ago as a student. Michael Gibson, defending, said Mr Kwan “worked hard”  to reach his position of general practitioner and he lives a “happy, successful family life”.

Kwan will appear before Newcastle Crown Court on the 6th of March 2024.

A spokesperson for Happy House Surgery, where Kwan is listed as a partner said: “The practice remains open and our priority is to ensure continuity of care and services for our patients at this time”
