Friends of Chirton Dene Park, a volunteer group dedicated to the maintenance of the park, have received a £19,000 grant from North Tyneside council.

The funding for the group has come from Northern Powergrid’s Social Impact Programme that has been awarded to the council.

The grant aims to improve the local area and build the image of the park.

A spokesperson for the council said: “The funding will be used to purchase tools and resources to help the group deliver a range of projects that will enhance the park, support volunteers and improve local biodiversity.

“The new equipment will build on the fantastic work already being carried out by local volunteers, giving them the equipment, resources and support needed to take on even more projects across the park.”

Councillor Hannah Johnson, Cabinet member for Neighbourhoods said: “The Friends of Chirton Dene Park do a fantastic job caring for and improving this valued community green space, and this funding is a real boost for their efforts.”

Friends of Chirton Dene Park have also hinted that they plan to hold workshops for people to participate in activities like bird and bat box painting and making water-purifying plant rolls.

Northern Powergrid’s Social Impact Programme offers funding for grassroots projects and often funds small local community groups to develop the areas across the North East.

They often give out amounts ranging from £1,000 to £20,000 per project to many different groups such as Hexham Community Centre and Cottingham Civil Hall.
