The Hedgehog blog – one shoe, two fireworks and a whole load of crisp packets

Written by on 9th December 2021

We’re in the home straight to (hopefully) achieving our bronze award as a Hedgehog Friendly Campus! This week a few of our wonderful Hedgehog Society members met for a litter pick on our City Campus. We climbed into hedges, hopped over fences and went cross-eyed from staring at the ground for too long, collecting six full bags of rubbish in just an hour!

This result greeted us with many mixed emotions. Pride that we had done a great job but frustration that so much rubbish had been left for us to collect. We are so lucky to have such a fabulous grounds team here at the University of Sunderland they keep our campus’ safe and clean by completing daily litter picks. This means that this sheer amount of rubbish was new and illustrates that littering on campus is an ongoing issue.

The hedgehogs may now feel more welcome in our abundance of healthy hedgerows, but as students, we need to do more to prevent the build-up of plastic bottles, cans and cigarette ends. Call your friends out if you see them chucking their finished cigarette on the floor, take your Greggs wrappers home, use the numerous bins dotted around campus.

It’s not hard and it’s for the hedgehogs.

Don’t litter.

Q. What’s a hedgehogs favourite video game?

A. Poke-emon
