This weekend Sunderland is preparing for the annual parade to commemorate Remembrance Sunday.

Ger Fowler, from Veterans in Crisis Sunderland, said: “Remembrance Day is a day where all veterans young and old can come together with people who they served with.”

He added that it’s a day in which veterans “drink and remember the good times”.

Remembrance Sunday commemorates the ending of the World War I 107 years ago and honours all those who died in conflicts. This year the day is also attributed to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II.

This Sunday, Sunderland is hosting its annual Remembrance Parade led by the 3rd Battalion, starting out on Burden Road at 10:35am on November 9.

The parade will be accompanied by the British Army Band, Catterick. People who are interested in going to the parade are advised to meet at the top of Burden Road at 10:15 am and will walk up to Mowbray Park, with two guns from the 4th Regiment Royal Artillery firing the weapons to highlight the two minutes of silence at 11am.

The Mayor Of Sunderland, Ehthesham Haque, said: “Remembrance Sunday is an important opportunity for the whole city to come together to pay tribute to all those who fought in conflicts past and present and those who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country.”

City landmarks such as the Northern Spire bridge will be lit red to commemorate Remembrance Day on the evening of November 9.
