The countdown to Christmas begins as Newcastle’s much-anticipated lights switch on event is returning – hosted by radio stars Steve Furnell and Karen Oxley.

The traditional curtain raiser for the festive season is taking place on Grainger Street on Thursday, November 6. Events begin at 6pm with fun activities such as songs, games, live music, and maybe even a very special visit from the fella in red before the big reveal takes place at 7pm.

Hits Radio 90s presenters, Steve and Karen, will host the Newcastle City Council event for a 13th consecutive year.

The Lord Mayor of Newcastle, Coun Henry Gallagher said: “I am delighted to be joining Steve and Karen on stage and to help start the Christmas celebrations in Newcastle.

“Our city is a magical place, at Christmas more than ever, and we have some amazing things planned right across the festive season, including our fantastic Christmas markets and our new New Year’s Eve event – Howaymanay.

“And what better way to kick the festivities off than by celebrating with family and friends, enjoying an evening of entertainment and seeing our wonderful lights being switched on.”

Throughout the night a variety of guests will be joining Steve and Karen on stage – all helping to get the crowds into the Christmas spirit.

Karen Oxley said: “We’re honoured to be switching on Christmas in our home city of Newcastle for the 13th year running! We love starting the North East’s countdown to the big day.”

Steve Furnell added: “It’s always a great night that really kickstarts Christmas in the Toon and we can’t wait to be part of it again.”
