The permanent opening of Sunderland’s newest bridge is set to transform match days, according to football fans.
Keel Crossing will officially open at 1:30pm on Saturday October 18 ahead of Sunderland’s home match against Wolves. Supporters’ group This is Wearside will lead a parade across the new bridge as fans make their way to the Stadium of Light.
A Love Supreme, an independent site and magazine for Sunderland AFC fans known for its mix of news, opinions, humour and nostalgia, also welcomed the move.
Dan McCallum from A Love Supreme (ALS) said: “For ALS, it will be great as it makes the stadium much more accessible and should help create a fantastic atmosphere on match days.”
The bridge was temporarily opened during the Women’s Rugby World Cup at the Stadium of Light in August, when thousands of England fans crossed it to watch the match against the USA. However, delays in final works meant it was closed again until its official opening this Saturday.

SAFC’s chief business officer, David Bruce, said: “The crossing will be a game-changer for fans making their way to and from the Stadium of Light.
“Matchday in Sunderland is about more than football – it’s about forging connections, togetherness, and a shared pride in our city. Keel Crossing embodies all of that.”
Councillor Michael Mordey, leader of Sunderland City Council, said: “As well as creating an inspiring new gateway to Riverside Sunderland, Keel Crossing provides a vital link that will make it easier for people to move across the river, connecting existing and newly created residential communities with the excellent employment, leisure, and cultural offer that is provided in the city.”
Keel Crossing will become another symbol of Sunderland, with being able to connect the riverside community with Sunderland’s City Centre.
The new footbridge being permanently open gives the public direct access to the Sheepfolds Stables, helping to build a great atmosphere before kick off at the Stadium of Light.
Tom Cuthbert Head chef at the Sheepfolds based PROPA! said: “Yeah we can’t wait for the bridge to open permanently. We all hope to have a great day and enjoy the atmosphere.”
First time I’ve been lucky enough to catch Keel Crossing lit up in red. Looks fantastic.
