Northumberland National Park extends ‘Big Dan Burn Walk’ rename after visitor boost

Northumberland National Park Authority has extended the temporary renaming of a popular Elsdon route until early September after strong visitor demand and a lift for local businesses.

The Elsdon Burn walk was renamed The Big Dan Burn Walk in March to celebrate Newcastle United defender Dan Burn’s iconic goal in the Carabao Cup final — the moment that delivered Newcastle United FC’s first major trophy in 70 years.

Tony Gates, Chief Executive, Northumberland National Park Authority said: “It is fantastic to hear that so many people have enjoyed the Big Dan Burn Walk in Elsdon, many visiting Northumberland National Park for the first time.

“We renamed it as a celebration for the people, and if they want it to stay for longer then we are happy to oblige.  It will remain known as the Big Dan Burn Walk over the summer and throughout the school holidays, giving more people the chance to experience the walk for themselves.”

Since the renaming, the walk and its local business have seen a major increase in people visiting and business is booming. Businesses and people on social media pleaded for the authority to extend the renaming and that is exactly what they have done.

Owner of the Bird in Bush pub, Jackie Sewell said: “The Big Dan Burn Walk has had an amazing effect on Elsdon and the local community. The business has had a huge increase in footfall with both kids and adults of all ages enjoying the Northumberland National Parks.

“It has certainly brought a vibrancy to the village and watching people playing and enjoying the village green is amazing. The health and wellbeing of people must be getting a real boost and often the young ones have never experienced the countryside and the animals.

“As a business we are experiencing a dramatic increase in visitors, with footfall and takings, which can only benefit the local economy and employment opportunities!”
