Newcastle United fans’ Wembley trip threatened by overpriced tickets

Newcastle United fans are being “priced out” of the upcoming cup final as fans hope to see an end to a 70-year wait for glory at Wembley on March 16.

Tickets are in high demand as fans scramble to purchase their seats as the Magpies march on to Wembley.

However, it has come with controversy and frustration, with even the most dedicated fans not getting a ticket. A small allocation of 31,939 has caused frustration – and opened the doors to touts.

A spokesperson for fan group 1892 said: “Significant allocations remain withheld from the participating teams’ fanbases and instead, often gifted to corporate sponsors or granted as stadium season tickets (in Wembley’s case), allowing those who do not have affiliation with either club or desire to attend to extort those that do.”

Tickets are selling fast, and even the most loyal fans cannot guarantee they will be able to reserve them, meaning they are looking elsewhere. However, many re-sellers are charging £1,000 or more.

A priority system is in place whereby fans need to accumulate points to ensure a place in one of six eligible pots.

Newcastle season ticket holder Luke De Redder said: “The way the tickets are distributed is not right. My dad, for example, got more points than me, and he was everywhere in Dynamo Kyiv and many places before points were a thing. We had a family situation; my uncle’s brother was given weeks to live, and my dad just made pot 3. “

“Luckily, he did, but I’d have been gutted, and I know he would’ve been, too, if he missed Wembley because they didn’t include loyalty away points. But people who went to home games over that—I know people with 200 points in pot 5 who probably won’t be there.”

The EFL has since reiterated that any supporter buying a ticket outside the relevant club will be denied access inside the stadium. Newcastle United also touched on this on their website when publishing information for supporters.

However, it hasn’t stopped fans from sharing their disappointment.

Mr De Redder said: “I think there should be a lot more from either team for finals and only 2-3,000 corporate, etc. I think the allocations are low, and for the FA Cup, it’s even lower: 27,000 or around there you get.”
