Historic Cup Final Set for the Stadium of Light

The Stadium of Light is set to host the Durham County FA Frank Pattison Challenge Cup final on April 15, as Shildon AFC and Whickham FC battle for the prestigious title.
This marks another return to the iconic venue, which has staged the final for the past three seasons. Last year, Whickham fell short, suffering a 3-0 defeat to West Auckland Town—leaving them eager for redemption this time around.
Durham FA CEO, John Topping, said: “It is the highlight for many players to be able to play in a cup final at the Stadium of Light, it is also a great event for the participating clubs, officials, supporters and their families.
“It is massively important clubs support football outside of the professional game and we are always working closely with Sunderland AFC. We consider ourselves as a link between the club and the grassroots community.”

Speaking on the impact it will have on the clubs Whickham manager, Tony Fawcett, said: “The experience it gives people can last a lifetime, as well as inspiring some of the younger players within the club. Football is all about memories and with the final being played where it is, that’s huge.
“Loads of our players are Sunderland fans so naturally they are excited, and a lot of our fans are really looking forward to seeing us step out at the Stadium of Light.”
Whickham aren’t just here for the occasion, looking to put last season’s disappointment behind them Tony said: “This is the second time in two seasons we are playing there, and the focus is on winning. It is important we are focused and ready and play the game, not the occasion.
Tony also praised Sunderland’s commitment to supporting the football pyramid and said: “I think it’s excellent that a club of Sunderland’s magnitude are supporting the event by hosting. For small clubs like us, it is huge that we are valued.”
Sunderland were the inaugural winners of the historic cup competition which began back in 1883. The club has since won the competition 23 times, the last victory coming in 2008 after a side containing Academy graduate Jordan Henderson, defeated Gateshead.
The final will take place on Tuesday, April 15, with kick-off at 7:30 pm. Ticket details are to be confirmed shortly.
