In December Nissan and Honda announced their plans to merge the two companies after conducting talks since last March.

But since then plans have stalled and now it has been announced that the deal has fully collapsed.

A Honda spokesperson said: “During the discussions between the two companies various options were considered regarding the structure of the business integration.

“Honda proposed changing the structure from establishing a joint holding company, where Honda would appoint the majority of directors and the chief executive officer.

“As a result of these discussions both companies concluded that it would be appropriate to cease discussion.”

Amid concerns that the deals collapse could lead to job uncertainty, Sunderland City Council, Councillor Michael Mordey said: “Nissan has a strong track record of investing in the city and its workforce across all our communities.

“It’s important we all continue to work closely together to ensure Nissan can continue to remain competitive here in the UK for the benefit of our economy in Sunderland, the North East and for UK plc, and can maximise its contribution to growing our green economy for the long-term.”
