Mini Science Club Brings Hands-On Learning to Sunderland’s Youngest Scientists

A science club designed for young children is offering a fun and interactive way to explore science through play in Sunderland.
Mini Science, a programme run by Big Science UK, provides science-based activities for children aged one to four. The club runs monthly sessions at Sunderland’s Winter Gardens and weekly classes in various community spaces across the city. Its next session takes place on February 14.
Unlike traditional learning environments, Mini Science encourages children to choose their own activities, offering a mix of messy play and clean play stations to suit different interests and comfort levels. The aim is to make science accessible and engaging for all, recognising that sitting still and listening doesn’t work for every child—especially toddlers.
Gemma Day, a parent whose child regularly attends Mini Science, praised the programme, saying: “The classes are always very welcoming, and everyone is so lovely.”
Mini Science sessions across South Tyneside are led by Neil and Helen Harrison, who say the hands-on approach has a huge impact on children’s development. Helen explained that over time, children gain confidence and become more open to new experiences.
“Some children won’t touch any paint at first, but by the end, they’re head to toe covered in some type of crazy soap or paint,” she said.

Sean Khalad, a parent interested in the sessions, believes science is crucial to a child’s growth and welcomes the age-appropriate approach taken by Mini Science. “It’s great to see a way for young children to learn that is both fun and accessible,” he said.
