Sunderland Paratrooper running over 500 miles to raise money for charity
Written by Josiah Burdsall on 20th December 2024
A serving paratrooper living in Sunderland is running over 500 miles with the aim of raising £10,000 for two charities. The chosen charities are Support our Paras and the Sunderland Community Soup Kitchen.
Targeting three different events, Shaun Mcglynn has already completed the ‘Last Soldier Standing’ competition, a 24-hour endurance race, and a 42-mile ultramarathon in December. He Will cap it off with a gruelling NC500 in March and April in 2025.
The paratrooper will be running 518 miles in 11 days for the NC500. Mr Mcglynn chose the two charities mentioned as they are ones he feels “passionately” about.
Of Support our Paras, the paratrooper said: “They help both serving and ex-soldiers who may be struggling after active service, family illness, etc. They are a lifeline for some ex-military and a huge support network helping families when needed.”
He similarly has high praise for the Sunderland Community Soup Kitchen, stating: “They do a fantastic job and continue to provide not only meals to those who need it but those getting back on their feet after being homeless. Funds coming in are becoming much smaller and less frequent and (donations) will be huge for them. It will enable them to continue to provide hot meals for the homeless and those in need of help.”
The Shiva Foundation, a research group campaigning for social justice says: “the need for (food banks) has skyrocketed in the past few years.” Whilst campaigning for stronger social justice, they also state that: “Charities must be embraced” in the current political climate.
At the time of writing, Mr Mcglynn has received 27% of the £10,000 target that he hopes to give to charity.
