Environmental activists such as Greta Thunberg are helping inspire Sunderland students to take everyday actions to tackle climate change.
The University of Sunderland’s environmental sustainability team takes a role in reducing the institution’s carbon footprint and encouraging students to take sustainable actions.
Organisers have noticed that the awareness of environmental issues, such as climate change and plastic pollution, is increasing among students.
Laura Middlemass, sustainability manager of the university, said: “Greta Thunberg has had a big impact on awareness. Whether the young people identify with her actions or not, they are at least aware of her.”
The environmental sustainability team is dedicated to getting students involved in activities such as litter picking, bulb planting and gardening. The students also learn how to take action to be environmentally friendly in daily life.
Willow Rose Liao, a final-year BA(Hons) Performing Arts student, said: “I buy nearly all my clothes from secondhand stores, and I repair or up-cycle anything I can. I also walk or take public transport here in Sunderland.”
Adewunmi Adeoye, a final-year BA(Hons)Media, Culture and Communication student, said: “I usually try to buy products that don’t come with so much packaging covered with plastic.”
