Live Review: Divorce at The Cluny Newcastle
Written by Lewis Bassindale on 25th October 2024
Live music can sometimes be described as incredibly euphoric and it certainly was last Friday (18.10.24) when Divorce headlined Newcastle’s Cluny for only the second time and their first set in the city since they supported Self Esteem at the BBC Proms Glasshouse takeover last year.
Firstly, a personal note to add context, I used my access requirements to reserve a balcony seat. This elevated the gig in my opinion as I was allowed to feel free and dance in my own space for the first time ever really.
While Divorce played their obvious hits such as Birds and Eat My Words, we were also treated to songs from the upcoming album such as All My Freaks.
Particular highlights included Scratch Your Metal, where you could truly feel the lead’s (Tiger) power, showcasing the band’s ability to captivate an audience. They also produced thought-provoking music, such as Heaven Is a Long Way, which seemed to bring the crowd to the brink of tears.
However, the biggest highlight was Checking Out, which brought the crowd together in one powerful, unified chorus—a sight to behold. The band even sold badges that read Choose Divorce, and they’re right: next time you’re booking a gig, do choose Divorce.
