37-year-old arrested after Whitley Bay street evacuation

A 37-year-old man has been arrested by Northumbria Police following the emergency evacuation of a Whitley Bay street today (October 20th, 2024).

Residents and businesses were asked to evacuate their properties this morning, after emergency services were seen to attend an incident on Station Road near Whitley Bay Metro Station.

ChronicleLive reported the street being cordoned off to the public, while Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service and Northumbria Police were at the scene.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: “At around 8am today (Sunday), we received a report of a suspected cannabis farm at a premises in the Station Road area of Whitley Bay in North Tyneside.

“Emergency services attended and, as a precautionary measure, a number of businesses and residents were evacuated.

“A 37-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of the production of a Class B drug. He remains in police custody while enquiries are ongoing.”

The evacuation saw several businesses close for the day, including the popular breakfast and brunch spot, Pablo Eggsgobao, and Italian restaurant, Pranzo Trattoria.

Residents and businesses affected by the evacuation have now been allowed to return to their properties.
