Sunderland’s small businesses are stepping into the spotlight, enticing shoppers with a variety of special offers as part of Small Business Saturday—an annual event celebrating independent traders set to take place on Saturday, December 2.

These offers include the opportunity to enter a prize draw at Aphrodite, a premier menswear shop at Vine Place, for a chance to win a £100 gift card.

Aphrodite is one of approximately 150 small businesses participating in the Sunderland City Gift Card scheme, which also includes Harrison & Brown Furniture at Holmeside.

Customers making a purchase at Aphrodite on Small Business Saturday will be automatically entered into a draw for a £100 Sunderland Gift Card, redeemable in-store or at any participating business in the scheme.

Other offers include the first 20 customers at The Sweet Petite on High Street West receiving a free takeaway hot chocolate.

Additionally, The Sweet Petite is providing free samples of its newest Christmas bakes and offering a 10 per cent discount on orders over £15 for those mentioning Small Business Saturday during their purchase.

The neighbouring Sunshine Co-Operative, known for its locally sourced food products, will host a tasting and making event on Small Business Saturday from 11 am until 3 pm.

Shoppers can learn how to create Christmas-themed canapés and dips using local products, presented on pottery made by Mark Barfoot Pottery.

At Diego’s Joint on Norfolk Street, the first five customers spending over £20 on Small Business Saturday will receive a complimentary ticket (valued at £15) to any upcoming comedy show.

In collaboration with Maker & Faber, two new commercial buildings in Riverside Sunderland, and Sunderland City Council, Sunderland BID is partnering to promote the event.

Leading up to Small Business Saturday, exclusive offers will be unveiled on a large screen in Keel Square.

Sharon Appleby, Chief Executive of Sunderland BID, said: “The event is a great opportunity” to remind shoppers of the breadth and diversity of the city’s independent retailers.

“They bring shoppers a range of goods and services they won’t find anywhere else, and they also make a vital contribution to the local economy so it’s really important we give them our support.”
