Black and White in the Big Apple: Geordies find a home in New York

Peter Dillon’s bar on 36th Street in New York City has become a match-day home for Newcastle United fans, bringing together a mix of Americans and visiting Geordies who watch games, recreate the St James’ Park atmosphere, and often form friendships for life — all from thousands of miles away.
Justin, whose mother is from Newcastle, said the group has a strong core of regular supporters. He added that while the fans are protective of the club’s identity, newcomers are still welcomed.
“We’ve got a really passionate group of regulars,” he said. “We joke about gatekeeping a bit, but anyone who comes in for the right reasons is welcome.”
Eddie from New Jersey explained that he supports the toon because his friend had “a bunch of football kits” and he wanted the black and white one and has been a supporter ever since. He spoke about how close the community is and that they’re all great friends who bonded over their football club, and how they have been to each others weddings.

The bar’s owner, Sean, helped establish the Newcastle supporters’ club at Peter Dillon’s as a way to share his lifelong support for the club, which he inherited from his father. What began as a small group of seven or eight fans has now grown into around 80 regulars on match days.
“There’s always a great crowd here,” he said. “It doesn’t matter if it’s half past seven in the morning or a big game like Manchester City — it’s always a great day, and anyone over is welcome.”
Newcastle fans can visit Peter Dillon’s on any match day, with the bar also set to host former players Micky Quinn and Darren Peacock in January, with further details to be announced.
