The Harlem Globetrotters are a unique spin on a traditional basketball team, travelling the world displaying their tricks and talents. From athleticism to comedy, their shows promise entertainment.
The globally-known basketball travelling circus prepares to mark their 100th year anniversary next year, with the team coming to Newcastle Utilita Arena this April (13th). They are expected to bring their iconic personality and flair to the fans in attendance.
Alex ‘Moose’ Weekes, known for his big hair, huge personality and wild antics is looking forward to this month’s show on Tyneside.
The veteran, 45, is a proud Guinness World Record holder for the farthest basketball shot off the back of a hand. He said: “The Globetrotters introduced basketball to the world.
“For me to be a part of something with such a rich history and legacy, which is also coming up to its 100-year milestone, I think that’s an amazing thing to be a part of and we want to keep that legacy going.
“I want to see smiles on all our fans’ faces and create magical moments that will be remembered in history.”
The Harlem Globetrotters were founded in 1926 and have performed in over 26,000 exhibition games.
Looking ahead to his performance at the Utilita Arena, Moose joked: “I feel like it will be warmer this year as it was pretty cold last time.
“But when we get into the arena and connect with the fans, that’s where the heat starts.”
Cherelle ‘Torch’ George, known for ‘bringing the fire’ every time she steps on court has happy memories of her previous visit to Tyneside.
‘The Queen of the Crossover’ also became the first woman in Globetrotter history to ever achieve a Guinness World Record for the most ‘under the leg tumbles’ (32).
“It’s been a few years since I’ve been in Newcastle, but one thing I remember is just the energy.” said Torch.
“The memories I was able to create with the fans, both on and off the court – I am excited to be back and put on a great show.”
