With the Carabao Cup final fast approaching, and travel disruptions looming – how are Newcastle United fans getting to Wembley?

Since beating Arsenal 4-0 in the semi-final, tickets for the Wembley final have become gold dust, and people are willing to do anything to get to the capital.

Numerous ballots run by the club ensured that fans who watch their team play week in week out, as well as going to all of the Carabao Cup matches, got priority over others.

However, travel disruption in the form of engineering works on March 15 and 16 means that there are very few trains travelling between Newcastle and York over that weekend.

Paul Karter from Newcastle United Supporters Trust said: “Newcastle United supporters are facing significant travel disruption over Carabao Cup final weekend, with multiple bus replacements between the city and York.

“However, as always, Newcastle fans— the best in football — will find a way to London. We always have, and we always will.”

The impediments means that many fans will need to make part of their journey via a rail-replacement bus, before catching a train at York – although many of these trains hiked up in price once it was confirmed the Magpies were in the final.

Darren Curry from Newcastle United Supporters’ Club said: “It’s a major inconvenience with time and cost. But Newcastle fans will be there as usual regardless of the circumstances.”

Due to the disruption, many fans are making other travel arrangements, with some taking the coach, some flying, or even driving the 542-mile-round trip from St James’ Park to Wembley.

Nathan Allsop, a Newcastle fan from Gateshead said: “We’re flying from Newcastle to Milan and then Milan to London – it’s longer than the train but it’s cheaper and that’s what matters to me.”

Fellow Magpies supporter Joe Robson said: “Me and my friends are driving down to Doncaster and then getting the train from Doncaster to London because it’s cheaper and saves us the hassle of getting on a bus for two hours.”
