Japanese film festival tour launches at Tyneside Cinema, Newcastle

The Japan Foundation Touring Film Programme is celebrating its 20th anniversary with an array of films showing in different cities in UK including Newcastle.

In the 2023 tour which starts on February 6, they are exploring the theme “the evolution of Japanese cinema”. There’s an extensive line-up, from recently released films and masterpieces to old films.

Jordan Davidson, the Sales and Marketing assistant for the Tyneside cinema said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for the North East to engage in the brightest examples of both modern and historic Japanese filmography.”

According to a press release on the cinema’s website: “Audience will be provided with food for thoughts: Where has Japanese cinema come from? What is its current position in the world of cinema? And where is it heading?”

Jordan said: “We are proud to have hosted The Japan Foundation Touring Programme over its long tenure.”

These films will be showcasing various “tones and styles, as well as the diverse skills of both experienced and emerging film talents.”

The Japan Foundation was established in 1972 and they promote international cultural exchange between Japan and the rest of the world. They also provide financial supports through grant programmes in the Arts and Culture, Japanese Language and Japanese study.
