The storm, which formed as a distinct feature in the jet stream partly due to the interaction of Hurricane Imelda and Humberto in the Atlantic, will bring disruptive wind and heavy rain for much of Scotland, Northern Ireland, and Northern England from Friday afternoon and into Saturday.

The North East of England could be subject to some impact from the storm throughout Friday night and into Saturday morning. This is a notably strong October storm based on experiences in the past which will most likely have lasting effects on transport and scheduled events throughout the course of the weekend.

Stephen Dixon, a Met Office spokesman, said: “While the most severe impacts from Storm Amy are for those in the west and north of Scotland, as well as Northern Ireland, those in the North East England will see some residual impacts from the system from late on Friday and into Saturday.

“Gusts of around 50-60mph are likely for many, possibly even higher for exposed coasts in the North East of England. Putting that into context, the peak gusts for the West of Scotland could be around 100mph in what will be an impactful October storm for some.

“Saturday will still be a windy day, with some scattered showers through the day. Things will gradually calm down on Sunday, with reducing wind speeds, though it will still feel relatively unsettled.”

Met Office Chief Forecaster Neil Armstrong said: “Storm Amy will be an impactful autumn storm for many in Scotland and Northern Ireland, though impacts will also spread to North West England and Wales, as well as a more widespread windy period for the rest of the UK.”

Tynemouth Surf Co were due to host their long boarding event this weekend, but this has had to be postponed until the following week due to the high estimated wind speeds being deemed to dangerous for contestants. Meanwhile, the North East Scouts Confido 2025 camp has also been affected as it was supposed to begin tonight. The event planners hope to begin on Saturday instead.
