Firefly is set to return as an animated series

Actor Nathan Fillion, along with the rest of the cast, has been teasing a reunion of Firefly. While many have speculated how the beloved show will return, Fillion confirmed the return of beloved series Firefly on March 15.

The show is set to return as an animated series set between the end of the series and the follow-up film Serenity, which means everyone’s favourite characters will be returning. Gina Torres, Morena Baccarin, Jewel Staite, Sean Maher, and Summer Glau are all set to return and have been part of the weeks long announcements leading up to now. Since it is between the series and film, Alan Tudyk will be returning as Hoban Washburne, however, Shepherd Derrial Book will not be returning as Ron Glass, who brought the character to life in the early 2000s, died in 2016 and so far no voice replacement has been announced to take over the role.

The series seems to be in good hands as award-winning animation studio ShadowMachine, who produced BoJack Horseman, is the studio in charge of animation.

Of course, this can’t happen without the creator Joss Whedon, and while the controversial director will not be involved in this project, he has given his blessing to go forward with this new edition to the story fans fell in love with.

The only catch to this announcement is they need a home. No network has picked it up yet, they have show runners Marc Guggenheim (DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, Arrow) and Tara Butters (Agent Carter, Reaper), they have a pilot scrip and ShadowMachine animation studios and development is already underway, they just need someone to pick it up. They’re asking for fans support with #BringBackFirefly, but while the fanbase is fanatical, it is small.
