Sunderland win first Premier League away game in eight years

Sunderland’s Dutch goalkeeper Robin Roefs in action against Nottingham Forest at the City Ground, Nottingham in September 2025.
Nottingham Forest played host to Sunderland in Game Week Six of the Premier League, with Granit Xhaka assisting Omar Alderete to win with a header – beating Nottingham Forest1-0.
It was a long-awaited victory for Sunderland – eight years after they last won a Premier League away game.
The last time the team won away in the PL was in May 2017, when they beat Hull City 2-0 at Kingston Communications Stadium in Hull City: though Sunderland were relegated that season.
So far this season, Sunderland have lost only one game, out of six, and have ranked third in the League, showing that they seem to be ready for the step up.
The Forest game was not easy, but a tenacious Sunderland team won through, with Granit Xhaka continuing to prove what an astute acquisition he has been, with a dominant display in midfield.
Meanwhile, in Robin Roefs they have a goalkeeper who is time and again capable of frustrating the opposition with some outstanding saves.
An interesting point: Sunderland now have 11 points since the start of the season in August, while Manchester United have only racked up 12 points since the start of April – and Manchester United are Sunderland’s next opponents, on October 4th.
