There is a 3K, 5K and 10K to run, as well as the obstacles courses Pretty Muddy and Pretty Muddy for Kids and these are sponsored by Standard Life.

Thousands of people run the course every year to raise money for cancer research into prevention, diagnostics and treatments, as well as to remember those who they’ve lost to the disease.

Angela Curry, 49, from Sunderland said: “I have family members who have been affected by cancer and any one of us can be diagnosed with cancer at any given time no matter how healthy you have been.

“I’ve never done the run before but I’m doing this for a good reason. I’m not into running but will try my hardest.”

Standard Life, part of the Phoenix Group, are this year’s headline sponsors and trying to help be part of the journey to beat cancer.

There are around 375,000 new cancer cases in the UK every year, with the survival rate having doubled in the last 40 years.
