What’s on: Live music you can catch in the North East this weekend
Written by Lewis Bassindale on 19th October 2022
As always, there’s so much live music for you to enjoy across the North East this weekend. If you’re wondering what to do, here are two gigs at one venue that can offer you a complete set of back-to-back night outs for under £30.
Friday 21st October – India Arkin & guests @ Bobiks, NE2 (tickets £9)
One of Newcastle’s biggest up-and-coming artists, India Arkin, will play the Jesmond venue Bobiks first this weekend. Her distinctive sound as well as confessional lyrics provide a thought-provoking yet striking set of tunes which often take you on a musical journey through messages of politics and personal feelings. Having just released her debut album on HMVs new 1921 label and is being now looked at by national media. This should be a intimate gig and a great way to unwind after a long week of work and study. India is supplemented with the support of neo soul and R’n’B artist Frankie Jobling who brings chill vibes and vocal warmth to the bill as well as County Durham based indie/alternative band Vice Killer, who should ensure those of a non-mainstream music disposition have their tastes catered for.
Saturday 22nd October – CIEL + Sarah Johnsone @ Bobiks, NE2 (Tickets £9)
Originating from the south coast and made of members from the UK, Spain and Netherlands. CIEL bring their indie rock sound (which has grunge, emo and 90s influences) to Bobiks. Having broken onto the non-mainstream scene over the summer with their banger of a track Baby Don’t You Know being added to the BBC Radio 6 Music A list as well as being chosen as a spotlight band as part of indie music stalwart Steve Lamacq’s New Music Fix show. If you are a fan of full-on head bangers, this is the show for you. Having sold out shows in Brighton and London, CIEL are supplemented by anthemic indie rock artist Sarah Johnsone who after coming onto the scene last year has exploded into one of the North East’s biggest indie queens. Some say she sounds like a Dodie or a Freya Ridings, but to us is simply one of the North East’s best.
