Investigations ongoing after Sunderland teenage car-plunge tragedy

An investigation is ongoing after three teenagers were killed when a car plunged into the River Wear yesterday.
Two boys and a girl were trapped in the Audi R3 after eyewitnesses said it accelerated into the river at Panns Bank, at around 1:20pm yesterday (Tuesday, September 29).
A 17-year-old boy managed to escape and was helped to safety by a passerby, who had called the emergency services when they saw the incident happen.
He was later arrested and remains in hospital custody being treated for minor injuries.
Deb Colnol, 56, who lives in Doxford Park, Sunderland, passed the scene shortly after the incident and said: “I think it’s wrong people are speculating because they’re young drivers.
“The families are grieving and comments and speculation don’t help the family.”
Emergency services rushed to the scene, with RNLI and coastguard boats seen desperately probing the area to try to find the submerged car.
At least 20 emergency vehicles were present, including ambulances, police, fire engines and search and rescue boats.
An air ambulance was also called and hovered overhead for a period before landing on the embankment.

Chief Supt Scott Cowie, Northumbria Police area commander for Sunderland, said it was “a truly tragic incident”.
“Our thoughts are with their families, friends and all those impacted by what has happened,” he said.
He added the investigation was at an early stage and the force was working to establish the circumstances.
The bodies of the two boys and girl were recovered on Tuesday evening and their families are receiving support from specialist officers.
The scene was still cordoned off today, with Northumbria Police requesting people avoid the area as the investigation is ongoing.

More tributes to those affected have begun to stream in from prominent figures, including local Catholic parish priest Father Marc Lyden-Smith, who said: “We can only imagine the anguish of their families and friends. I pray that God will hold those families close in their grief, and that the people of Sunderland will surround them with compassion rather than speculation.”
