The fan reaction to Newcastle United’s new club crest

Written by on 6th October 2026

Newcastle United announced a new club crest last week following an extensive consultation period with more than 27,000 supporters. Changes have now began at St James Park, with the new badge and branding being plastered around the ground to mixed reaction from supporters.

The new crest is expected to be in use on club merchandise from the beginning of the 27/28 season after the fans chose the design over two other options. The current crest has been in use since 1988 and and is beloved by Newcastle fans but the intricacies of the crest make it difficult to be recreated on merchandise and digital platforms.

Newcastle United X fan account Magpie24/7 said: “They listened to the fans and kept the core heritage elements intact instead of messing about with a total redesign, like the car crash redesigns at Juventus, Leeds and  Aston Villa. Simplifying it for the modern digital age makes total sense, even if it’ll take a bit of getting used to seeing anything other than the 1988 badge on the shirt.”

The announcement about the crest comes six weeks after the club announced their plans to build a world class training complex in Woolsington Hall. Both the training ground and crest announcement are part of the clubs ambitious plan to become one of European footballs leading clubs.

The new crest has already been placed on the walls surrounding the ground and the club shop.

Newcastle journalist Joel Bland said: “In terms of the badge being integrated in and around the stadium, there’s naturally expected resistance from some fans, who have established an emotional connection to the previous badge that transcends just a logo of a product.

“I do see this as evolution though, rather than reinvention. If Newcastle are serious about establishing themselves among Europe’s elite, developing a consistent and commercially competitive identity is an important part of that ambition, provided the club never loses sight of the traditions that underpin it.”
