Newcastle United’s £190m training complex: potential benefits for the club and region

Written by on 29th September 2026

Excitement is building among Newcastle United fans, six weeks after the club announced that it had reached an agreement to acquire the 260-acre Woolsington Hall estate for a proposed £190m training and performance complex. Subject to planning permission, the club hopes the men’s first team will move to the site for the 2029–30 season. A formal planning application is expected in early 2027.

Newcastle United’s training ground has been based at Darsley park since July 2003, but after the Saudi led takeover many NUFC fans were eager to see a new training ground that is level with the best in the world.

Newcastle fan and journalist Joel Bland shared his thoughts on the potential training ground: “I think it’s a really positive step for Newcastle and something the club has needed for a while. The current facilities have been improved, but having a purpose-built, elite training base on that scale should make a massive difference to the overall infrastructure of the club.

It should also improve the optics of Newcastle when they’re trying to attract players. When prospective signings visit, you want the training ground and facilities to reflect the ambitions being sold to them, and this would certainly do that. Overall, it feels like another important step towards Newcastle having the infrastructure of a top European club.”

Upon completion, the Woolsington Hall training ground is expected to be the second biggest club training ground after Spanish giants Real Madrid.

Colin Ferguson, Newcastle City Council leader further highlighted the positive impact the new stadium complex will have.

He said: “Newcastle United is a key part of the fabric of our city and a source of huge pride for generations of Geordies. A thriving Newcastle United will always be a benefit to the city and the regional economy, you need to look no further than the Carabao Cup celebrations to see the connection between our residents and the club.”
