Heed boss Cattermole on the brink

Lee Cattermole’s future at Gateshead is in doubt after a disastrous start to their National League campaign. 

The 38 year old was given his first managerial role as he was appointed first team manager of Gateshead in June. However, he has struggled to make an impact as the Heed sit bottom of the league with just four points from ten games.

The ex Sunderland hero is currently under huge pressure from the fanbase after recent results- including a 6-1 defeat at home to Southend. Gateshead face Altrincham at home tonight in the league and will be a perfect opportunity for Cattermole to turn the form around. In ten league games so far the Heed have scored six goals and conceded 24.

The club has also had lots of problems behind the scenes and Cattermole has been limited to just free transfers and loans to work with so it has been hard to have a settled changing room.

Dylan Parry, who covers the National League with DAZN, said: “ I feel bad for him as he hasn’t really been afforded the investment to be given a good chance and I hope he is able to turn it around”.

Cattermole was appointed to replace Rob Elliot who left to join fellow National League side Carlisle who also took some of the star players along to Cumbria with him. After a thorough search Cattermole was given the job and signed a two year deal.

Callum, who runs one of the biggest National league fan pages -NL lowdown, said ” I think there is an argument that he’s been let down by the board but that said the actual appointment has been a disaster”.

His post and pre match interviews have also been a big talking point in North East football especially after the loss against Wealdstone when he sent his assistant out to do an interview. Callum also said ” His interviews clearly aren’t doing anything to get the fans onside and I am shocked he has lasted this long.”

Dylan also mentioned: ” I think tonight could be the final straw for him if it doesn’t go well”.
