Sunderland is getting ready to celebrate the Eurovision song contest with a full day of free partying and entertainment in the heart of the city this weekend.

Celebrations will kick off at 1pm on Saturday (May 13), with numerous activities to keep the whole family entertained, and will end with a live broadcast of the Eurovision final on a big screen in Park Lane.

Organisers are promising something for everyone, including Abba tribute act Voulez Vous, a Sunderland’s Got Talent singing competition with prizes to be won, and plenty of children’s activities, ranging from face painting and glitter artists to a Tik Tok dance-off and the chance to meet princesses and other famous characters.

The Eurovision party is supported by Sunderland City Council and Sunderland BID (Business Improvement District), but has been organised by the owners of Port of Call, Gatsby and the bosses of venues such as The Point and Ttonic.

Karen Dickman, of Port of Call, said: “The fact that the Eurovision Song Contest is taking place in the UK makes it even more exciting.

“And we thought we should really make it something to celebrate for all the family, so we hope that people will turn up throughout the day and really make it an occasion to remember.”

Sharon Appleby, chief executive of Sunderland BID, praised the Park Lane traders for arranging the event, saying: “We know that Eurovision will be bigger and better than ever this year and we know that many people were disappointed they couldn’t get tickets to see it live in Liverpool.

“Hopefully this will more than make up for that, with such an exciting mix of entertainment which really has something for everyone.”

Fans are being invited to head down to Park Lane this Saturday to enjoy the fun, lively atmosphere of Eurovision in a new way, and cheer on our country’s own Mae Muller, while enjoying delicious food and drinks from some of the city’s most popular traders.
