Shrove Tuesday: Our top pancake picks this Pancake Day

To celebrate pancake day, Spark have curated a list of our favourite North East restaurants to get your pancake fix this Shrove Tuesday.

Whether you are a lover of sweet or savoury food and prefer crepes or American style pancakes, we have all options covered.

Love Lily – Sunderland

Love Lily is a locally owned restaurant that serves up a delicious brunch menu, including it’s much loved stacks of American pancakes, which come in a variety of toppings such as Lotus, Biscoff, Nutella and strawberries, kinder, and many more. Following on from previous years, Love Lily have created 10 specials exclusively for Pancake Day and are open for extended hours to cater for the busy day. Please note that the restaurant does not take bookings, so is always first come, first served.

They have recently opened a new, larger venue in Herrington, which will be serving pancakes all day from 9am to 9pm, alongside their original venue at Roker seafront.

The Pancake Café – Durham

If you live in Durham, this is the perfect place to enjoy your Pancake Day this year. Speaking to The Pancake Café, they said: “We’re a family, independent business and we’ve been in Durham for 20 years. Everything is made in-house and we cater to any dietary requirements or preferences. We’re a pancake loving family, with an all Durham student work force and we absolutely love our staff (and they love us!). We can’t wait for the upcoming pancake week.

“We are doing a pancake week, which luckily coincides with half term, and will be open from dawn till dusk – or until the last pancake is served on Pancake Day”.

The café sell both sweet and savoury crepe style pancakes, alongside gluten and dairy free and vegan options, so no one misses out!

Blacks Corner – East Boldon

Blacks Corner, located in East Boldon, is an eatery and wine bar, serving up a high quality menu using small batch produce from British farmers. It’s permanent brunch menu includes two topping options for a stack of four butter pancakes, which are seasonal fruit and golden syrup, or Block & Bottle Pancetta and maple syrup.

However, this Shrove Tuesday, it is offering a menu of specials for the day. Alongside the two regular toppings previously mentioned, you can also enjoy a banoffee, lemon curd or Nutella stack of pancakes.

These specials are available from 9am to 2pm so make sure to get down early so you don’t miss out on these delicious pancakes!

808 Bar & Kitchen – Sunderland

808 is a tapas and cocktail bar located in the heart of Sunderland, and although pancakes are not a part of the restaurant’s usual menu, Bar 808 said: “We do well every year from partaking in pancake day.”

Therefore, for the fourth year running, they are selling a limited edition pancake menu on Shrove Tuesday.

The menu consists of stacks of American style pancakes with five topping choices:

  • Strawberry and Nutella
  • Kinder Bueno
  • Lotus Biscoff
  • Mini Egg
  • Lemon and sugar

You can also add ice cream to any of the pancakes for just £1!

808 Bar & Kitchen boasts a modern interior with a luxurious feel, so if you want to visit a place that both looks good, and sells great pancakes in Sunderland then this is the place to go next Tuesday evening.

Aidan’s Kitchen – Newcastle

Aidan’s Kitchen are an independent coffee shop in Newcastle. Laura, from Aidan’s Kitchen explained they are “a small, friendly & very busy brunch restaurant.” With 17.5k followers on Instagram (@aidanskitchenncl), it is no surprise that they are super busy, so we can only assume that this will be no different on Pancake Day! Alongside the restaurant’s popular pancakes they usually have to offer, they will be doing a pancake special on Pancake Day, but this will be posted on their social media closer to the day.

Additionally, if you are already a lover of Aidan’s Kitchen, you will be excited to hear that they are opening a second place in April called ‘Little Aidan’s’.
