The Queen in and around Sunderland: Celebrating the Platinum Jubilee with Pictures from the Past

To mark the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, we’ve delved into the photo archives to remember the times from recent years when the monarch has visited Sunderland and surrounding areas in the North East.

May 2002 – Queen Elizabeth II passes through Brockley Whins station on the new Sunderland to Newcastle Metro Link after officially opening it at the Park Lane interchange, Sunderland. The Queen arrived in Sunderland on the second leg of her nationwide Golden Jubilee tour.
May 2002 – The Queen laughs as she is offered a teddy bear from one of the young schoolchildren who greeted her as she arrived in Seaham, where she enjoyed a walkabout on the second day of her Golden Jubilee tour of north-east England.
May 2002 – The Queen walks through Sunderland’s Winter Gardens, home of 1,500 exotic plants in an indoor, sub-tropical climate.
December 2000 – The Queen visits the New Maternity Unit, Sunderland Hospital, Sunderland.
July 2012 – Queen Elizabeth II and Duke of Edinburgh arrive for their visit to Gateshead International Stadium as part of her Diamond Jubilee visit to the North East.
July 2012 – The Queen is greeted by locals while visiting Corporation Quay, in Sunderland.
