You can’t stop the beat of the international musical phenomenon. Hairspray has arrived back in Sunderland, more than three decades after hitting the big screen.

Set back in the 60s in Baltimore, Tracy Turnblad has a big heart and even bigger hair. A dream audition makes Tracy a local star and her newfound fame helps her love life.

Sunderland’s very own Katie Brace plays an incredible Tracy Turnblad and has an incredible onstage connection with Tracy’s love interest, Link Larkin, played by Ross Clifton. However, every member of this touring cast is sensational.

The performance is filled with amazing costume designs, incredible vocals and dancing, as well as classic hits from the original film.

From You Can’t Stop The Beat to The New Girl In Town to The Nicest Kid In Town, every single musical number was sensational and a highlight of the show.

A further highlight of the show was the role of Motormouth Maybelle played by Brenda Edwards and her phenomenal vocals. She gained fame from the X Factor in 2005 and is most well known for her theatre roles and her seat on the Loose Women panel.

For opening night, Sunderland Empire was filled with the young and the old for the famous show, directed by Paul Kerryson, and there is an aspect of the show for every single member of the family to enjoy.

The production is on at Sunderland Empire until Saturday 15, January 2022, with evening performances at 7:30pm each night and a 2:30pm matinee performance on Wednesday and Saturday. Tickets are available to book here.

The UK tour of Hairspray continues into next year with visits to eight more cities up until April 2022.
