Written by Robert Wilson Baker on 6th October 2021
The smash-hit romantic musical comedy Waitress is heading to the North East this Autumn as part of the first-ever UK and Ireland tour. Making its regional premiere, the show will play Sunderland Empire from October 25 to October 30.
Based on the 2007 movie, Waitress features an all-star cast of West End and musical talent including 2017 Eurovision contestant and X-Factor finalist, Lucie Jones, reprising the lead role of Jenna from the London production. Jones has gained a string of theatrical credits in recent years including Legally Blonde, Ghost and We Will Rock You.
Joining Lucie will be popstar and Busted band member Matt Willis, taking on the role of Dr Pomatter. Willis’ stage credits include Wicked, Flashdance and Little Shop of Horrors.
With music and lyrics are written by Grammy award-winning, singer-songwriter Sara Bareilles, Waitress tells the story of Jenna, an expert pie maker in a small town, who dreams of a way out of her loveless marriage. A baking contest in a nearby county and the town’s new doctor may offer her a chance at a new life, while her fellow waitresses offer their own recipes to happiness. But Jenna must find the courage and strength within herself to rebuild her life. This beautiful musical celebrates friendship, motherhood, and the magic of a well-made pie.
