Premier League survival the “priority” for struggling Sunderland side

Europa League Football is not the cause of Sunderland’s poor run of form, according to a BBC Radio Newcastle commentator.
The Black Cats have struggled for consistency in their second season back in the Premier League, with defensive frailties and a lack of goals contributing to their position at the bottom of the league table.

Nick Barnes, BBC Radio Newcastle Commentator, said: “I don’t think European football has affected the players because of the number of changes
“I think Sunderland’s dip in form is due to other factors – too many players below their peak this season.”
Last season Sunderland’s main strength was their defensive stability, and after nine games they conceded seven goals – at the same point of this season they have conceded 17.
Scoring goals has also been a problem for the Black Cats this season with only seven goals in their opening nine games.
Recent injuries to Brian Brobbey and Wilson Isidor has hindered Regis Le Bris’ side and their goalscoring ability.
Nick Barnes added: “The squad depth is good – bar too many injuries – so those to Isidor and Brobbey are a worry.
“But overall I think Sunderland have just about got it right in terms of numbers.”
Previous seasons have seen sides that qualify for the Europa League suffer a drop in their Premier League performance the following season.

Teams in the table above on average finish 7.3 places lower, highlighting how Europe can hinder them.
Ipswich Town provide a stark example as they were promoted in the 1999/2000 season and in the following season they achieved European qualification.
However, the Tractor Boys were relegated when playing European football in the 01/02 season and this will be a big concern for all people involved with Sunderland as they will be looking to avoid the same fate.
James Copley, senior digital journalist for the Sunderland Echo, said: “Premier League survival has to be the priority for me. Staying up is essential to everything Sunderland are trying to build.
“I wouldn’t write off the Europa League, but if a selection decision comes down to protecting the league campaign, that has to take precedence.”
