As temperatures begin to fall a Gateshead knitting group, The Dunston Knit Wits, is doing their part to help those affected by the rise of homelessness in the North East.

The Dunston Knit Wits group, created by Linda Ryan, 77, four years ago, brings local people together not only to socialise but to knit for charities and those in need. This year has seen a 31% year-on-year increase in homelessness in the North East, the largest regional percentage rise in England, highlighting the growing need for support from local communities. During the colder months of the year, they focus on knitting hats, gloves, and scarfs to donate to the Newcastle people’s kitchen.

Ryan explained how she set up the group after the pandemic to give people an opportunity to get out of the house and socialise.

“I set up the group after covid time for people like me to be able to get out of the house. We knit various things at different times of the year, and during this time, we knit for the homeless because of the colder weather. I enjoy acts of kindness and try to find ways each day that I can commit a kind act.”

While the group is helping those in need, its members are also helping themselves. The weekly sessions allow those who take part to make new friends, enjoy each other’s company, take part in an activity they all love, and improve and support their mental wellbeing.

Mary, 72, one of the most frequent knitters, said that seeing people experience homelessness motivates her to contribute.

“I see the homeless outside, and I really feel for them all, especially at this time of the year. Knitting for a purpose takes you away from everyday life and is really beneficial to our mental health”

Jean,78, said: “We all love sitting and chatting with each other, and knitting for the homeless gives us a great sense of satisfaction. During the wintertime, we focus on knitting specifically for the homeless, as there is a greater need for hats, scarfs and gloves with the weather getting colder”

Although helping the homeless is their current focus for this time of year, the Dunston Knit Wits also support many other local charities making baby clothing, blankets, and teddies for the Little Lanterns and the QE Maternity Ward. The wool they use is mainly donated from members of the community, allowing the knitters to continue supporting those in need throughout the year.

Liz, 69, said: “It’s really lovely to hear back from charities that our work is appreciated and respected.”

As the colder months continue, the Dunston Knit Wits will continue to keep knitting to provide warmth for those experiencing homelessness, while supporting the wellbeing of their own members.
