Call for two-year verdict on future of Tynemouth outdoor pool

The resurrection of Tynemouth’s outdoor pool has been discussed for years.
The future of Tynemouth Outdoor Pool is back on the agenda, with councillors being asked to give the long-running restoration project two years to establish whether it can actually be delivered.
A motion from Tynemouth Conservative father-and-son councillors Lewis and Jay Bartoli proposes a programme of work with the Friends of Tynemouth Outdoor Pool (FTOP), looking at how the outdoor facility can be restored to its former glory.
The proposal is not a commitment to build the pool, but North Tyneside Council would report progress every six months before bringing a full options report back at the end of the two years.
Council officials say the cost would likely be significant – and that there is no funding for it within the existing budget.
However, the council is holding £46,800 from the Coastal Revival Fund, awarded to FTOP to support development of their proposals, which has not yet been spent.
If a financially sustainable scheme can be found, the motion calls for the next steps towards delivery – insisting that its current derelict state cannot continue.
