North Tyneside Labour to vote against council allowance rise

The North Tyneside Labour Group have agreed that they will vote against a proposed 3.3% increase in North Tyneside councillors’ allowances – and want other parties to do the same.
The proposed increase would see the basic councillor allowance rise from £11,176 to £11,545 a year – an increase of £369 – and the Mayor’s allowance would rise from £70,691 to £73,024, an increase of £2,333 a year.
But a Labour group spokesman has now confirmed the group will oppose the rise.
“Labour councillors will vote to reject this increase and freeze allowances at their current level. We encourage every political group and independent councillor to do the same”.
The decision was made with councillors aware that council budgets are under significant pressure, with the spokesman adding “This is the right decision for North Tyneside residents.”
Proposed allowance rises for councillors on North Tyneside are being opposed by the ruling Labour group.
The proposed 3.3% increase was recommended by the council’s Independent Remuneration Panel, with the recommendation based on the median point of the 2026/27 local government pay award.
The Independent Remuneration Panel has previously said that repeatedly freezing allowances could reduce their value over time and potentially make the role less accessible to people from different backgrounds.
The final decision will now be made by councillors at full council.
