Five cute couple ideas to do in Sunderland this festive season

Written by on 7th November 2025

With Christmas just around the corner, you might be wondering how to make the most of your relationship this festive season. From ‘Brr baskets’ to cosy films by the fire, this five-step list of festive ideas is full of ways to boost the romance and make the season feel extra special.

Go to a Christmas Market

Christmas markets will soon be popping up across Sunderland, offering a festive mix of stalls, gifts, and seasonal treats. Each market has its own theme and atmosphere, making it the perfect place to do a bit of Christmas shopping while enjoying a wholesome day out with someone special.

Running from November right through to Christmas, these markets are a great way to soak up the festive spirit — and don’t forget to treat yourself to a Christmassy hot chocolate or a cheeky mulled wine to keep warm while you browse.

Bring the decorations out early

In many households there is an age-old debate on when the right time to put the decorations up is, with some families putting them up in November and some set on waiting for December. Regardless of this, it can be agreed that nothing screams Christmas more than making the house look like Winter Wonderland. So, get in the festive pjs, and get decorating! To increase the romance factor, personalised decorations can be used.

Make a ‘Brr Basket’

The viral ‘Brr Basket’ is perfect to gift your loved one and the concept is simple; buy a basket and fill it with cute Christmas themed items. Some great ideas for this could be fluffy socks and a Christmas themed blanket, or perhaps a gingerbread candle, and Christmas themed snack. The options are limitless so be creative and have fun with it!

Christmas Karaoke

Music is a great way to get in the festive spirit this year and a Christmas-themed karaoke night will be sure to leave any duo jolly. There are many karaoke Christmas tracks available to try on YouTube, such as All I Want For Christmas Is You, and Baby It’s Cold Outside, so get your singing voice at the ready and be the best musical partnership this year.

Go for Christmas themed food and drinks

Many pubs and restaurants extend their menu around Christmas, from festive burgers to stuffed Yorkshire pudding wraps and cranberry sauce, there are lots of fun, festive choices to try this year. Christmas themed drinks can also be found with Costa coming in with an entire “Christmas drinks menu”.

These five festive ideas are a great way to add a little extra romance to your Christmas — but the real key is to keep that spirit of fun and creativity going all season long.

And of course, because the season is also about giving, it is a great time to remember all of the hard work local charities do, especially during the cold, winter months. To read about the work of the Sunderland Community Soup Kitchen and find out how you can help, click here.
