Halloween at Sunderland University

Written by on 20th October 2025

For Halloween this year, The University of Sunderland has an array of free events for students and families alike.

The university has already started putting out decorations to get the tone right, such as plastic pumpkins and paper bats.

Halloween doesn’t have to wait until the October 31. One of the events for anyone interested in getting into the scary spirit includes a Halloween Craft Session on October 29 at the David Putnam Media (St Peters Campus) where participants can design a spooky tote bag, create nail art and hang out with their friends from 5-7pm. It will offer an open and fun space for people of all ages to enjoy themselves before the day itself.

Georgie Wooburn, a Spark Radio team member who has helped organise, said: “Halloween is always dead fun for the students. It’s really nice to get everyone together, a cozy vibe for a cold time of year.”

Film fans are not excluded, either, as there will be a doubt bill of both Invisible Man films  – the iconic 1933 James Whale classic based on the HG Wells novel and the critically acclaimed 2020 Leigh Whannel remake starring Elizabeth Moss. The screenings take place at the Media Centre Cinema at 3PM as part of Cineclub’s tradition of linking vintage horror to modern directors’ unique reimagining. All are welcome.

For those interested in celebrating the actual day at Sunderland, however, the Riverside Cafe will be holding a party starting at 6pm and ending at 9pm. Costumes are not a requirement, but snacks and music will be provided.

Ade Adeoye, President of the University of Sunderland Students’ Union, said: “We’ve got exciting events planned for Halloween. Spooky decorations, themed food and a party. What I’m most looking forward to is carving a toothy grin on my pumpkin at that party. And unveiling my costume!”

Near the university, The Independent, Sunderland, is hosting a tribute to the Rocky Horror Picture Show, fittingly entitled the “The Stockton Road Horror Show” at 6.30pm. Tickets cost £10. Book via the website here.
