Team Sunderland capped off an incredible sporting year with its annual Sportsball awards on April 25, celebrating achievements across a wide range of categories.

After a blowout varsity victory over York St John in the Clash of the Minsters, there was plenty for Sunderland’s teams to celebrate.

Men’s Rugby Union won Team of the Year and shared the Club of the Year award with the Women’s Netball side after their historic trophy and league double in BUCS competition.

President of men’s rugby, Harvey Allen, expressed his delight saying: “Doing the double is a hugely fulfilling achievement, it was double or bust when we were setting our targets at the start, especially after how close we came last year.”

Allen added: “Getting recognition from the university and everyone involved is just really rewarding. Just knowing that all of us together produced something so special and that our names will be in the history books at the uni makes me feel happy every time i think about it.”

Men’s football also enjoyed a successful evening, its members winning nine individual awards alongside winning ‘Committee of the year’ and the Vice Chancellor’s Charity Award for raising over £8,200 for charity.

He later went on to say: “Sportsball was great not just for the committee, not just for me, for the whole club. You work very hard throughout the season and the idea always is to have something in mind for whats to come, and that’s all working towards goals such as being recognised by the university so its of course just so satisfying.”

DJB finished with: “All the lads are pretty gutted the season is over but in terms of next year it’s important we don’t take our feet off the gas, we want to start where we left off.”
