Under pressure Sunderland manager Regis Le Bris has “Credit in the bank”

Written by on 21st October 2026

With Sunderland now sat bottom of the Premier League table after seven games pressure has begun to mount on Sunderland manager Regis Le Bris.

In a week where Sunderland narrowly avoided a humiliating defeat to second division Portuguese side Torreense, the Black Cats also suffered a disappointing defeat to struggling Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium. A chorus of boos rang out from the away end.

The defeat saw Le Bris side sink to the bottom of the table but Sunderland Echo reporter James Copley believes that Le Bris has “credit in the Bank.”

“He inherited a club that was 16th in the Championship and took them to the Premier League and European football. That is an extraordinary body of work.

“It doesn’t excuse the performances but I think he has earned the opportunity to turn this around.

“It’s definitely a big week. Sunderland are bottom of the table and there needs to be a response because the performances have not been good enough but I still believe that Le Bris deserves time.”

Post match, Nordi Mukiele called out his side labelling them as “arrogant” and not good enough. While other players went on to social media to express their disappointment.

“I think it was a good thing.” A Love Supreme spokesman, Thomas Thirkell said about the reaction post Bournemouth.

“It needed to be said, perhaps not publicly. Mukiele is someone who is used to winning. We are bottom of the league so we have to do better.”

The Wearsiders failed to register a shot on target against Bournemouth having an expected goals of 0.07, the Cherries had 4.32, according to ESPN, the highest they have ever recorded in the Premier League.

Sunderland have now suffered four league defeats in a row, scoring in only one of them.

With many fans beginning to turn and Sunderland playing three games in 7 days, Thirkell said:

“This week is pivotal for Le Bris. I think he has got to focus on the league right now. Leeds at home, it is going to be a tough game but he has to start picking up wins.”

According to Opta’s Supercomputer, Sunderland are now favourites to go down with Fulham and Coventry also rounding off the bottom three.
