Lead singer and guitarist Andy Pennick explained that the idea came to him while playing in a function band: “I was looking down the setlist and it occurred to me there was a number of songs that had been used in the Shrek films. I thought to myself that these songs are really well received and that maybe there’s mileage for a band that only plays songs from those soundtracks.” Almost five years later, the band continue to tour the UK, with 2026 seeing them make their North East debut in Sunderland. Andy says that he is ‘excited’ to bring the show to a new audience, expecting it to be a typically rowdy night of classic hits.
Since Shrek was released back in 2001, it has spawned three sequels (with another on the way), and has firmly placed itself in the cultural identity of a generation. Part of the franchise’s charm is its soundtrack, from 80s hits like Holding Out for a Hero, to more modern hits like All Star by Smash Mouth. With Shrek 5 set to be released in June 2027, Pennick joked he hopes to be gifted a preview: “It would be really cool if someone from Dreamworks [the production company behind the Shrek films] could drop us an email to let us know what songs we should be learning.”

Sinéad Bríd, a fan who has seen The Ogretones multiple times, describes the show as a night of ‘pure fun’ that is ‘full of nostalgia’. She knows what it takes to impress, regularly being ‘rumpelstilt-scouted’ for the coveted best dressed award at the end of the night.
