Ricky Gervais’s Mortality tour in Newcastle took an unexpected turn last Thursday when a witness reported an altercation breaking out in the crowd
Gervais has enjoyed a highly successful career in comedy and television, best known for The Office and, more recently, After Life, which offers a poignant portrayal of the challenges a spouse faces after losing their partner to cancer.
In recent years, Gervais has taken a candid yet humorous approach to exploring what it means to be at the end of life. His current tour, Mortality, adopts a light-hearted perspective on the twilight years of his journey.
When asked about what she witnessed, tour-goer Sue Todner, said: “There was lots of female shouting from the top tiers during the second half.”
She continued: “At one point, Gervais shouted out, ‘What’s the matter?’ as he initially thought it was hecklers. He then responded by saying, ‘Shut the fuck up,’ joking that it was his turn.”
Sue added: ‘It went on for about 10 minutes or so before a large group was escorted out by security.”
Northumbria police said: “Officers attended and found two men, aged in their 20s and 40s, had sustained minor injuries after being assaulted by another man.
“A 31-year-old man was arrested at the scene on suspicion of assault. He has been bailed pending further enquiries.”
This was just his third tour date of 11 in the UK with his last being on the 28th of January at Birmingham’s Utilita Arena before the Mortality tour goes global.
