Sunderland’s Beautiful Beaches are flying the flag after being awarded prestigious Blue Flag and Seaside Award by leading environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy.
It was announced today (Thursday 17 May) that Roker and Seaburn beaches have once again picked up the national awards for their consistent high water quality, cleanliness and constantly improving visitor amenities
The internationally recognised Blue Flag will fly over the twin resorts this summer as a symbol to bathers and beach users of the high water quality and great facilities available for families, residents, visitors and tourists.
The beaches are among 190 to win the coveted awards from Keep Britain Tidy for being Britain’s best beaches, including 65 international Blue Flags and 125 Seaside Awards with 42 beaches achieving both awards.
This is the seventh consecutive year Roker and Seaburn has also won a coveted Seaside Award.
The awards are national recognition of the continuing high standard of maintenance and environmental improvements along the seafront.
Sunderland City Council Portfolio Holder for Communities and Culture, Councillor John Kelly, said:
“We’re delighted to have been awarded the prestigious Blue Flag for Roker and Seaburn once again. They help provide a visible reminder to everyone of the cleanliness of our coastal bathing water and first class facilities along our seafront.” – Cllr John Kelly
Keep Britain Tidy’s Chief Executive Allison Ogden-Newton said:
“The success of the 148 beaches in reaching the very high standards demanded by both awards is testament to all those who have worked so hard to protect and improve our beaches – from beachmanagers and volunteers to local people and businesses.
“When you enjoy a trip to a beach flying an international Blue Flag or Seaside Award, you know you are on one of the safest, cleanest and very best in the country.” – Allison Ogden Newton
