Project Kraken

The River Wear and surrounding coastal areas are being patrolled as part of a new initiative.

Border force have 6 different vessels that are part of the Maritime Command. They patrol over 11 million miles of UK coastline.

The name of the operation, Kraken, comes from an old Nordic tale of a giant sea monster which was said to come in the form of a giant squid

They use a combination of state of the art detection technology, international partnerships and intelligence – based operations to tackle illegal activity at the border.

The ships are called Eagle, Nimrod, Active, Alert, Hunter and Speedwell.

Each one can travel at a top speed of 31.4 knots per hour, and can go 280 nautical miles on one tank of fuel!
